THERE are numerous sites where you can download Mark Twain books or writing online. because most of Twain's early writing is now out of copyright, some sites allow you to download the entire work in a choice of formats (such as Project Gutenberg), while others tease the reader along a page at a time with a myriad of proprietary formats. Either way, it's still fun to poke around and get a taste of Twain's considerable output over what can only be described as a long and impressive career.

Project Gutenberg is by far the best on-line archive of Twain's books. But no matter how good the library, it's difficult to compare a computer screen with, for example, curling up on a couch with a $5 hardcover copy of "Roughing It", which will take you thundering across the Nevada desert on a stage coach — with Sam Clemens and his brother Orion to keep you company on a rollicking frontier adventure.
